IKSU Badminton Ladder

Welcome

Welcome to the IKSU Badminton app!

The app is designed to organize fun, competitive and well-balanced badminton matches. Players compete against opponents of similar skill level, track their progress over time, and enjoy a structured ladder system with automatic standings and player ratings.

The app currently includes four main features:

  • Double Ladder
  • Single Ladder
  • Ratings
  • Rating Match

Each feature is explained below.

Getting Started

Membership

To participate in the ladders you must be a member of IKSU Badminton.

Interested in joining? Contact us at badminton@iksu.se

Create an Account

Create an account using your email address and complete your player profile.

After confirming your email address, you can sign in and submit a request to join the ladders.

Check your spam folder for the confirmation email. If you don't recieve a confirmation email, reach out to us.

Approval

An administrator will review your request. Once approved, you will automatically be included in the draw for the next ladder period.

Double Ladder

Players are grouped into divisions of similar playing strength. Each division usually consists of 4-7 players and is played during a one month period.

Within each division, players rotate partners so that everyone gets to play with and against the other players in the division.

Scheduling Matches

Once a period begins, a match schedule is automatically generated.

The players themselves arrange when to play the matches within their division.

All matches must be played before the end of the current period.

The players themselves enter the match results directly in the app. The standings will then be updated accordingly.

Division Standings

The division standings are based on the total number of sets won during the current ladder period.

Each set victory awards one point to both players on the winning team.

In this way each player will get an individual score.

Promotion and Relegation

At the end of each ladder period:

  • The top player(s) move up to the next higher division.
  • The bottom player(s) move down to the next lower division.
  • The remaining player stays in the same division.

When the next ladder period starts, all players start in their newly assigned division and with all scores reset.

For more information, see the Rules on the Double Ladder page.

Single Ladder

The Single Ladder works similarly to the Double Ladder, but matches are played as singles.

Players compete against others in their division during each ladder period, and are promoted/relegated at the end of the period.

For more information, see the Rules on the Single Ladder page.

Communication

Our primary communication platform for the ladders is WhatsApp.

Each ladder has its own WhatsApp group. Invitation links can be found on the Singles Ladder and Doubles Ladder pages in the app.

Peer Rating

To help place new players in an appropriate first division, the app uses a peer rating system.

When creating an account, new players are asked to estimate their own playing level and provide some information about their badminton experience.

Existing players will then see that a new player has joined and are invited to rate the new player's skill on a scale from 1 (beginner) to 10 (advanced). If you are unfamiliar with the player, you can simply select "I don't know this player" instead of providing a rating.

All peer ratings are anonymous. Individual ratings are never shown to anyone. Administrators only see the average peer rating, which is used together with the player's self-assessment to determine an appropriate starting division.

The only purpose of the peer rating system is to help place new players in their first divisions where they can enjoy competitive and balanced matches from the start.

Rating System

In addition to the ladder standings, every player has individual ratings that reflect their long-term playing strength in the respective category.

Player Rating

The rating is separate from the ladder division but is affected by the match results. This means that a player can move between divisions while still keeping their rating history.

A player has both a singles rating and an individual doubles rating.

Rating Updates

The rating systems currently implemented are based on the Elo-rating system.

Your rating change depends on several factors, including:

  • Your current rating
  • Your partner's rating (in doubles)
  • Your opponents' ratings
  • The match result

Winning against stronger opponents usually gives a larger rating increase than winning against lower-rated opponents.

It takes many match results before a player's rating stabilizes, hence the ratings of new players might fluctuate much in the beginning.

Rating Match

Want to make your ordinary everyday matches (outside the ladders) more exciting? Invite your friend(s) to play a Rating Match!

Creating a Rating Match

A player can create a Rating Match invitation in the app.

The invited player(s) need to accept the invitation before the match is played.

Reporting Results

After the Rating Match has been played, the result is entered in the app.

The rating system will take these match results into account when the ratings are updated next time.

Fair Play

The ladders are built on honesty, respect, and good communication.

Please:

  • Arrange your matches in good time.
  • Report results accurately.
  • Respect your opponents.
  • Communicate clearly if you need to reschedule.
  • Only use Walkovers when appropriate.

The goal is to create enjoyable and competitive badminton for everyone.

If you experience unfair play, inappropriate behaviour, harassment, or anything else that makes you feel uncomfortable, please contact us. We want the ladder to be a safe, respectful, and enjoyable environment for everyone.

Privacy

For information about what data the app stores and how it's used, read our Privacy Policy.

Your name and player profile are visible to other registered players.

Your email address and phone number are only visible to players who are participating in the same ladder as you. This allows players to contact each other to arrange the matches.

Your personal information is never shared outside IKSU Badminton.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I join at any time?

Yes. New players can request to join a ladder at any time. After approval by an administrator, they can be added before a new ladder period starts.

What happens if a player can't play a scheduled match?

If a match can't be played because all players can't find a suitable time slot, the match can be marked as cancelled. Cancelled matches do not affect the standings or rating.

If the match can't be played because one specific player/team is unavailable while the other player/team has repeatedly tried arranging the match, the match can be marked as Walk-Over. Walk-Over matches affect the division standings but not the ratings.

What happens if I miss a ladder period?

Your account and rating remain in the system. When you return, an administrator can place you in an appropriate division.

When are ratings updated?

Ratings are updated when an administrator publishes the latest rating changes, commonly at the end of the ladder periods.
